How To Prepare For Spring

Ah! It’s that time of year again. The snow begins to melt, the days get longer, and the air gets warmer. Humans aren’t the only ones who love springtime. Spring is great for dogs as well as they can spend more time outside running around, playing, and bathing in the sun. But with the new seasons come changes for them as well, and there are many ways to prepare for these changes.

With spring being just around the corner here are some tips on how to prepare your pup for spring.

  • Groom their coat! As spring approaches the amount of shedding that you see in your dog will increase as they lose their winter coats. During this time it is important to brush them regularly in order to loosen and remove the dead hair and dandruff. In addition to brushing them its important to bathe them as well.
  • Wash their bedding. Not only is it important to keep them clean, but it helps to keep the area they spend most of their time in clean as well. Washing their bedding will help to remove any dander, fur, and bacteria that have built up over the winter. To wash their bedding use a mild detergent, and winger in the rinse cycle in place of dryer sheets for softness.
  • Maintain the yard. After being cooped up all winter your pup is going to want to get out and stretch their legs. Make sure to check your fencing, and for any holes or hazards that may have developed over the winter. Make sure that any source of water (pools, streams, ponds) are fenced in to avoid any accidental drowning.
  • Get the right gear. As the weather warms up you will more than likely be going on more walks and spending more time outside. Make sure to double check your leashes and collars for any fraying or signs of distress. You do not want to risk breaking the leash while you are out. It’s also a good idea to double check the fit of their collar to assure that it is still a good option for them. The weight that they may have gained over the winter might be enough to cause the collar to fit tightly.
