Inside Petology: A Beauty Wellness Company for Dogs

An interview with Rick Ferritto, CEO of Petology

What's your background? Why Petology? Where did the need arise? Tell us a bit about the history of Petology.

“I founded Petology Products in 2011 because I’m passionate about dogs and their quality care. Prior to 2011 I was focused on selling cosmetic specialty ingredients to the largest personal care companies in the world. When I started Petology, I handed off the cosmetic ingredient company to my wife, Shari, so I could focus 100% on what I love... dogs. I realized really quickly that by helping owners improve the comfort and beauty wellness for the dogs they love so much, I was helping increase the overall wellbeing of dogs.

“When I first got started, it became immediately apparent that there was an inferiority, or lack of sophistication, when it came to the dog grooming products on the market at the time. That realization led me conduct a comprehensive study in regards to a dog’s natural biological skin and their specific coat requirements. I wanted to better understand what type of ingredients could restore and replenish a dog’s skin and coat back into a natural state of comfort, health, and beauty. I discovered that each one of my dog’s skin was extremely sensitive and very unique. It was at this point that I felt a call-to-action on the behalf of all dogs to develop a company that formulated dog grooming products around each dog’s very unique and specific needs—ensuring all dogs the comfort, health, and natural beauty they so much deserve. This is when Petology was born!

“This epic journey was the catalyst for new advanced cleansing technology and now we are proud to be considered a company that offers the safest, healthiest, and most effective beauty care products on the the market for dogs. And let me add that it's more than just that…  it’s a philosophy that while our roots may be in science, we believe our dogs’ comfort and beauty solutions come from nature’s ingredients.

“Our souls are connected to our dogs and we believe our dogs were put here to comfort our souls each and every day we have them. We must protect what we love and Petology’s natural healthy, and beautifying products do just that, which is why our slogan is Protect What you Love…Groom Your dogs with Petology.”

You have succeeded at creating a formula that has incredible reviews and is highly recommended by veterinarians, a huge testimony to the product... talk about your passion for natural pet care and your commitment to quality products. What's been your biggest success?

“Without question, our greatest success and happiness comes from the hundreds and hundreds of heartfelt testimonials we’ve received from customers, veterinarians, and retail partners like the ones below.”

“My German Shorthaired Pointer had severely dry, flakey skin due to an allergic dermatitis. After appropriate medical treatment, I'd been bathing him and applying ointment for some time without any results. Once I tried Petology’s Oatmeal and Honey Shampoo, his skin improved rapidly in a short time. I was impressed with the fragrance, the texture, the natural ingredients, and most of all, my happier dog with a beautiful coat. I'm referring your shampoo to my veterinary clients for their pets.”

"When we evaluate a product line, the two most important aspects it can bring to our product mix are quality and strategy. Petology, checks both of those boxes. Their product is superior to any other currently on the market. It’s sulfate-free, ethically produced, and cleans thoroughly while also providing the best shine of any shampoo & conditioner. Petology as a company is also good to do business with. They’ve kept their product exclusive to the independent pet specialty channel, and are strong partners to their retailers. Rather than put all of the sales on us stores, they are always willing to help grow the line with promotions and other sales initiatives. We’re happy to carry the product and appreciate doing business with Rick and his team."

"So I received a sample of the Petology shampoos and leave-in conditioner for my several dogs. One of my dogs (my 8-year-old Golden Retriever) had a hot spot come up in the last 3 months. The spot was red hot, balding, and really uncomfortable. I bathed her with Oatmeal and Honey Shampoo now twice and have brushed her daily using the Petology Oatmeal and Honey Leave -In Conditioner as recommended by Rick and I swear it was a miracle, no joke. Her hair started to grow back and she wasn’t sensitive to the touch in that area. All of the dogs, which include three half-breed Huskies, smell amazing for days after a baths (which is not a norm with Huskies in Florida, just saying!). Do I recommend these products? 100% yes!!!!! It really is amazing. Thank you petology."

Where do you see Petology in 5 years? 10 years.

“Our mission was to change the culture on how dog grooming products are made. Petology is making products ethically and with with full transparency of the real ingredients being used in our products. I really believe that Petology is the pioneer of the future when it comes to grooming products, technology, and standards—what we’re doing now represents how all dog grooming products will be made in the next 10 years.”

What's your advice to budding entrepreneurs?

“Be prepared to work twice as hard as you think!  Make sure to build in proper budgets for branding. Branding really matters! Don’t quit, be prepared financially for the success of your business model to take twice as long as you had hoped. And most importantly… avoid debt at all cost.”

Tell us about your pet. What's your go-to Petology product?

“My dogs are my soulmates! My go-to product depends on each dog’s individual skin and coat requirements. My smiling Yellow Lab in the picture is Ms. Gracie. She has sensitive skin so we use our Sensitive Therapeutic Shampoo and Conditioner for her. Ms Bella, our Yorkie, has oily skin and for her, we use our Keratin Frotifying Shampoo. Unfortunately, we have lost our older Yellow Lab, Maggie.”
